SUBSTANCE ABUSE
The Substance Abuse Prevention Program is one of many comprehensive services available to each client at Eisenhower Center. Offering therapy, education, and thoughtful, caring support, the Program has become a cornerstone of treatment for clients dealing with the difficult challenge of substance abuse.
Donna Russell, LMSW, DCSW, ACSW, CBIS, founded the Substance Abuse Prevention Program and exemplifies the professional commitment to treatment given to each client. The Center's Clinical Director, Maxine Morris, Ph.D., CBIS, is also deeply involved. Donna develops and implements the Program's educational and therapeutic activities. Donna, Maxine, and other members of the clinical team make treatment recommendations, taking into consideration the special needs of each person served by the Program.
Group therapy plays a significant role. Depending on each client's success at maintaining sobriety and the level of support needed, participants are scheduled to meet with a group up to four hours each week. Discussion is lively, and typically focuses on topics including addiction, brain injury, recovery, building non-chemical skills to promote "coping with life on life's terms," the Twelve Steps of Recovery, and relapse prevention.
In addition to group therapy, Donna provides individual consultation and psychotherapy on an "as needed" basis. These sessions supplement the individual therapy offered by other psychotherapists on staff.
Family members are encouraged to attend Family Education Day, which is held monthly and covers a six-month series of topics. They are also able to participate in a group therapy session with clients as well as a multi-family group. Two dedicated representatives from local Al-Anon groups join with family members and share their experiences, helping family members find ways to promote their own healing and growth while supporting their loved one.
Eisenhower Center places a high value on participation in traditional Twelve Step groups, such as the fellowships of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA). To supplement therapy provided by the Center, each participant in the Substance Abuse Prevention Program is encouraged to regularly attend AA or NA meetings (transportation is provided) and to actively utilize an AA or NA sponsor. Eisenhower Center also holds a closed NA meeting on-site weekly as well as a monthly "Sponsor Night," which is an informal reception and group discussion for clients and sponsors, designed to encourage active use of AA and NA sponsorship.
To round out the services offered by the Program, Donna maintains a lending library of AA and NA print and multimedia material for client use.
